Packing for Simplicity: 5 Tips to create a Stress Free Flying Experience

Let’s face it – flying can be extremely stressful. What with flight delays and cancellations, worrying about getting through airport security quickly and hoping they don’t pull you to the side for something in your luggage, or that miserable moment when you find yourself sprinting to your gate at the opposite side of the airport while hauling a bag equivalent to the weight of several bowling balls. In that sweaty moment, you then regret packing months’ worth of items you expect to use on your 3-day trip.

Through much trial and error, I have found the key to simplicity for navigating the flying experience. These tips will eliminate stress, and bring back the enjoyment of travel so that you can people-watch and relax stress-free on the way to your destination.

1. Less is Definitely More!

I make it a rule to bring only 1 carry-on bag for all my flights domestic and international. This may sound crazy or impossible, (I am a female, and understand!) there are a lot of things you could potentially want to bring on a trip. But believe me, it is definitely doable and worth it in the end to downsize.

What are the main benefits of traveling with only 1 carry-on bag?

It saves money you would be spending on checking in extra bags.

It saves time and stress on waiting in long lines at the airport to check in your bags and get tickets. Instead, simply print out your tickets at the kiosk immediately and be on your way!

It also saves time waiting to pick up your bag at your destination so you can start your vacation right away. Besides, carrying your bag with you prevents the airport from losing your bag on its way to your destination. That is a nightmare no one wants to deal with, especially in a different country!

How to pack for simplicity yet still be prepared?
Only EVER bring a week’s worth of clothing at most. If you plan to be gone for longer than a week, find lodging with washer/dryer accommodations.
For shoes, pack a nice formal pair if you plan to dress up on your trip as well as some sandals or flip-flops if you plan to swim. Your sneakers will be on your feet when going to the airport so do not need to go in your bag.
Bring travel-sized hygiene products, any medications you would need, etc.
Cell phone charger, do not forget it!!!

2. Finding the Perfect Travel Bag is key.

I dislike roller bags with hard plastic containers. Yes, they are durable, and the wheels are nice when the bag is heavy (this shouldn’t be an issue anymore!), but too often do I see a person trying to fit one of those large bags in an overhead compartment that is 1/4th its size! No amount of magic or frustrated maneuvering will force that bag to fit. Causing embarrassment of holding up the line, and a hit to your pride when you have to then check your bag anyways.

I prefer a larger backpack with lots of pockets. It allows for fitting in small spaces like under your seat if the overhead compartments end up being filled, and 100% of the time will fit in an overhead compartment. Plus pockets galore are always wonderful. Also! A bigger bag will leave the option to bring home souvenirs with any extra space that you have left.

3. Dress for Success!

ALWAYS bring a sweatshirt or jacket, even if your destination is hot. The plane will more than likely become freezing at some point in time with the air conditioner blowing full blast. I prefer bringing a jacket that can be easily removed in a constrained space, as the plane temperature can vary throughout the flight and it can get awkward if you are flailing around struggling to remove a sweatshirt while attempting to avoid touching the stranger seated next to you.

As mentioned above, I like to wear comfortable sneakers or walking shoes to the airport that can be used when wandering around at your destination.

Dress comfortably! Wear something breathable that provides comfort when seated for long periods of time.

4. Bring an empty water bottle.

Airport security does not allow outside water bottles, even if they are unopened through the security check. Rather than spending money on expensive airport water, just bring an empty water bottle container of your choice and fill it up at the water fountains in the airport. Most even have a purified water refill station.

Note, you can bring food through security, such as trail mix. This would be a nice little snack if you want to save money on food.

5. Additional fun items that are optional but handy.

I like to bring entertainment items that aren’t battery-powered to save my cell phone battery such as a book of interest, a sketchbook, or a journal to make the time pass by.

Extra tips to avoid alerting airport security.

First off, double-check all the pockets of your bag while packing! I have had an instance where I had pepper spray in a forgotten pocket that I accidentally brought with me and had to throw away at the airport.

Make sure you do not have any aerosol cans in your bag- the first thing that comes to mind is spray-on deodorant or hair spray. Make sure you choose the non-aerosol options so you don’t have to trash these items at security.

Liquids over 3.4 oz aren’t allowed.

Nothing with a blade such as a pocket knife.
